Ingredients
1 package (12 rolls) Hawaiian-style rolls cut into 1-inch cubes
1 cup blueberries (or raspberries, blackberries, or mixed berries)
8 large eggs
1 1/3 cups half and half (or substitute 1 cup whole milk + 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream)
1/2 cup white granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Powdered sugar for dusting
Maple syrup for serving
Instructions
1-Prep the bread and berries: Cut the 1 package (12 rolls) Hawaiian-style rolls into 1-inch cubes. Layer half the cubes in the dish, top with half the 1 cup blueberries (or other berries). Repeat layers.
2-Whisk the custard: In a bowl, whisk 8 large eggs, 1 1/3 cups half and half (or 1 cup whole milk + 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream), 1/2 cup sugar, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until smooth.
3-Pour and press: Slowly pour the custard over the bread and berries. Press down gently to submerge dry pieces. Let sit 5-10 minutes if time allows.
4-First bake covered: Cover with foil and bake at 350ยฐF for 40 minutes. This prevents premature browning.
5-Uncover and finish: Remove foil, bake another 20-30 minutes until top is golden and center slightly jiggly. Knife in center should come out mostly clean.
6-Rest and serve: Let cool 10 minutes. Dust with powdered sugar and drizzle maple syrup.
7-Bonus: Pineapple Maple Syrup: Mix 1 cup crushed pineapple (drained), 1/2 cup maple syrup, and 1 tsp lemon juice. Warm gently or serve cold for a pineapple maple syrup recipe for French toast twist that screams tropical!
